România - Transylvania - Szekely Land - Tusnad ![]() It is the pearl of Transylvania and the Carpathians, a well-known resort of the country, one of the most beautiful alpine spas of Harghita county. Due to its geographical situation and landscape endowments, Băile Tusnad enjoys great popularity. It can be approached on the 12 highway. The settlement is situated 32 km far from Miercurea-Ciuc, 37 km from Sfântu-Gheorghe, 35 km from Baraolt and 67 km from Brasov. The Szekler circular railway has a station at the spa, that can be regarded as the main gate of Harghita county. In November 1934 Băile Tusnad was separated from Tusnad. Today it is the only town of the basin of Ciucul de Jos. Băile Tusnad is the smallest town in Romania. It received the town status in May 1968 thanks to its mineral waters and spa. In 1992 the town had a total number of 1,953 inhabitants, out of which 1,822 Magyars. ![]() The picturesque environs, the Piatra Soimului and its surroundings, the Lovers' clearing, Lake Saint Ann, the paths of the pine forest, the specialties of the Szekler cuisine, the carriage walks - are only some of the many attractive possibilities offered to the guests by Băile Tusnad. The spa and climaterical resort lies in a peculiarly beautiful environs at the eastern ending of the volcanic South-Harghita, at the foot of the Ciomad block, in the pass of the Olt in Baile Tusnad (606 m). It borders the Baraolt-mountains in the south-west, and the Bodoc-mountain range in the south-east. The sub alpine climate, its air rich in negative ions is a significant touristic factor. The average altitude of the spa is 656 m. Băile Tusnad lies at the eastern foot of the Piatra Soimilor (848 m or 853 m) and on the western slopes of the Ciomatul-mountain (1301 m). At the way out of the pass we can admire the Bicsad-valley-basin. Ciomatul is the youngest volcanic mountain in the Carpathians. The twin-craters prove that there was still an active volcanic activity in the Pleistocene period. Today the post-volcanic phenomena can be observed. In the crater of the Ciomatul is situated the only volcanic lake of Middle-Europe that has remained in a good state, Lake Saint Ann, while in the twin-crater the Mohos-peat-bog can be seen. The main water-course of the spa is the Olt-river into which several streams flow. The artificial Lake Ciucas was created from the water of the Olt and a small holiday place was also created around it which hosts a skate-rink in the winter. The pass of the Olt at Băile Tusnad (or Tusnad-pass, 606 m). It was formed on the western side of the Ciomatul-Puciosul volcanic mountains.
