Miercurea-Ciuc municipality is the county-town of Harghita County.
It lies in the eastern part of Transylvania, in the centre of the Ciucului Basin, that is encircled by the volcanic chain of the Harghita and Ciucului Mountains.
The town was built at the junction of the roads from the Olt valley in north-south, and west-east direction, that crosses the carpathian passes Vlahita (Tolvajos) and Ghimes.
It is settled on the terraces of the Olt and partially at the margin of the cones of dejection of the Sumuleu creek, at the foot of the Sumuleu Mare (Nagysomlyo) Mountain with a height of 1033 m.
The town has many sights and it is a proper starting point for Transylvanian itineraries
